Russian Conscription Ballot Paper for the Russian Army It is written that Itzchak David Gregoire Abrahamson from Skemskoi has been selected to go into the army. This person, a Jew from Bayskogo Society, is ‘invited’ to be in the army. It is dated 1885. The army invitation was given by the Shavelskim Organization. He will be in the army until he is 42 years old. (Interpretation: The word invited is interesting because he probably would not have had a choice; the length of his service is known to have been 25 years. Lana says that this document is not especially for Jews, it is for everyone). Itzchak’s fathers name was Gregoire. The physical description of Itzchak is recorded at the centre of the document, at the fold: His eyes are brown; his hair and eyebrows are dark. His beard is messy (unshaven). It is impossible to read the description for his “nose” and “ears” as this is written just where the fold is and has deteriorated to the point of being illegible. At the back, the document states how you should look when you arrive and what you will be paid for, for example, if you arrive in a shirt you will be paid 50 kopek, and you will be paid 35 kopek for underwear and 4 rubels for a coat.
