ОписаниеThe book is a remarkable and rare collection of liturgical, traditional songs of praise and psalms sung at Jewish Services by cantor, choir and solo singer, named “Todah W’simrah”. The book was used by the donor’s grandfather, Fritz Brandman, who sang as cantor at Temple Emanuel. The book is etched on front cover “J. Brandman”. Fritz Brandman escaped from Germany in 1939 coming to Australia. Here he was the cantor at Temple Emanuel. Margaret has recordings of her grandfather singing at Stanwall Park on the south coast. Through Fritz Brandman and this book religious singing migrated from Germany to Australia.
Until the 1930s, synagogues in Australia were Orthodox. In 1930 the Liberal movement (Reform Judaism) began with the establishment of the Temple Beth Israel in Melbourne. Subsequently Temple Emanuel was established in Sydney where Fritz Brandman sang as cantor.
