ОписаниеPhotograph of Oscar Shub and Ilan Buchman taken on their wedding day at Emmanuel Synagogue, 2 May 2018. They stand before Rabbi Kamins, flanked by family and friends.

The couple met at a dinner party in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1971 and have been together since. They initially settled in South Africa, immigrating to Australia in 1986. Australia passed the marriage equality law on 9 December 2017, shortly after, Oscar and Ilan set a date to be married. Their ceremony was the first Jewish religious same-sex marriage in Australia and was presided over by Rabbi Jeffrey Kamins at Emmanuel Synagogue on 2 May 2018.

As well as photos of the wedding and another taken in Johannesburg in 1972, the couple also donated their acceptance rings inscribed with ‘until we all belong’; during the nuptials Oscar and Ilan exchanged these for traditional, full circle wedding rings. The Museum also received the hashtag sign from their celebrations and a yarmulke embossed with their names and date of the wedding.
