He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star (for those who completed 6 months in operational combat), the France & Germany Star (for operational service in the area between 6 June 1944-8 May 1945), Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945 (for those who served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945).

Henry Klas (born Jindrich Kohn) escaped Czechoslovakia making his way to France where he joined the French Foreign Legion. He then joined the Czech Brigade under the British. In England, Henry was reunited with Rose Wollitzer (they knew each other from back home) and soon married. After the war, the Klas’ returned to Czechoslovakia where their daughter Miriam was born but soon left due to the Russian occupation. The family arrived in Australia in 1949.
