НазваниеJourney to Shanghai
ОписаниеThis image depicts Edith Elter travelling on board an unknown ship to Shanghai, China in 1939. Edith is the daughter of Hermann Elter and was born in Vienna, Austria. Unknowingly she had escaped the Holocaust in central Europe.
During 1938-9, as other countries borders were closed, German and Austrian Jews were encouraged to immigrate to Shanghai, China as it was the only open port. This was the direct result of the Austrian Anschluss, the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany on the 12 March 1938. European Jews travelled to Italy where they would be ferried on liners to Shanghai, for internment into the ‘ghetto’ district.
On the reverse is a handwritten note in German, which intimate and evocative. It says "In memory of the voyage to Shanghai / April 1939 / Leo Loeb". Leo Loeb was the photographer. This is insightful in understanding the innocent and unaware mindset of Austrian and German Jews when they embarked on their journey to Shanghai. This photograph may have been a token given to Edith, however the identity and relationship of Leo Loeb is unknown.
The name of the ship is unknown; this item comes from a deceased estate collection.
