ОписаниеKennkarte – Identity card for Frieda May (nee Dames), today named Freidl May, issued on 31 January 1939 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. The ID card is stamped with the letter 'J' identifying the passport holder as Jewish. The middle name 'Sara' has also been inserted.
As of July 1938, every German citizen over the age of 15 was required to carry a Kennkarte at all times; another measure in a broader plan to bring an end to Jewish assimilation in German society.
The donor, Quentin May’s mother, Freidl Dames, escaped with her parents (Jakob and Klarchen) and sister Gertrud to Australia just before the war, travelling on the British ocean liner RMS Maloja, arriving in Australia on 30 May 1939.
Freidl was born in Fürth, close to Nürnberg (Nuremberg). Her father had a cinema business; Quentin has donated an album of movie posters to the Jewish Museum in Berlin.
