ОписаниеCzech and French service medals and ribbons awarded to Henry Klas. Henry served the majority of time in the Czech Brigade of the British Army during WWII. It is difficult to ascertain exactly what the medals are as there are no service records available. The medals are: The 1939–1945 Commemorative war medal (is a commemorative medal of France established on 21 May 1946 to recognize individual participation in the Second World War.) The Commemorative Medal of the Czechoslovak Army Abroad (awarded to those Czechoslovaks who were outside their country at the time of the German invasion, or subsequently escaped abroad, and joined Allied forces or all-Czechoslovak units. ), the Medal for Gallantry, the Military Medal for Merit (bronze), Czech Legionnaire Community and 60 Year Anniversary Medal 1945-2005 (issued to those who contributed to the countries Liberation in a commemoration of 60th Anniversary). There are no citations and it is not clear why the medals were awarded.
Henry Klas (born Jindrich Kohn) escaped Czechoslovakia making his way to France where he joined the French Foreign Legion. He then joined the Czech Brigade under the British. In England, Henry was reunited with Rose Wollitzer (they knew each other from back home) and soon married. After the war, the Klas’ returned to Czechoslovakia where their daughter Miriam was born but soon left due to the Russian occupation. The family arrived in Australia in 1949.
