ОписаниеIn 1938 Hans Charmatz was able to leave Austria for London. From there, he set about trying to help friends from his Zionist Club in Vienna to leave the country. Hans developed a plan to establish a knitwear factory in Australia, arguing that he needed skilled workers from Austria. He wrote to the Australian government requesting immigration permits for 20 "specialists" and their families. His bold plan was successful and was responsible for saving the lives of 20 of his friends and their families.
This is a letter written by Hans Charmatz to the Australian Minister for the Interior outlining his plan to start a Viennese knitwear company in Australia. He argues that as a result of Germany’s annexation of Austria the industry has suffered severely but because of the reputation of the quality of these goods produced in Austria there is high demand and thus an opportunity for Australia. As most of the raw goods come from Australia it is ideal to set up the industry there and could be accomplished by bringing some Viennese specialist to start up the industry.
