Description

Miklos Horthy, the Regent of Hungary from 1920-1944, came to power after the collapse of the communist regime in 1919. He was a dominant figure in the counter-revolution, which took revenge on the 'horrors of red terror'. There is no doubt that Horthy was antisemitic. Up to 1944 Hungary defended the lives of the Jewish population from the Final Solution, which only overtook Jews in Hungary after the country was conquered in 1944 by the German army. In less than 2 months 450,000 Jews were deported to the Third Reich. Most were sent to Auschwitz. Horthy put an end to these deportations at the beginning of July and prevented their renewal as long as he remained in power
