During the second half of April 1945, thousands of inmates were removed from Dachau concentration camp and its satellite camps and forced to march to the high Alps of the Tyrol. Several possible explanations for this have been raised, but Bauer concludes that the death marches were simply meant to carry on the mass murder of the camp inmates by other means
