The most significant Jewish archive in Eastern Europe before World War II was that of YIVO (Yiddish Scientific Institute) which was a description of the daily lives of Eastern European Jews. It was a leading educational and cultural institution, with departments for research, and history, but its founding premise was that all aspects of Jewish life should be rigorously, scientifically studied
