Jaffa riots, May 1921

One of the first violent clashes between Jews and Arabs took place on May 1, 1921 in Neve Shalom. The rivals were communists and the socialist-Zionists of Ahdut HaAvodah. All were Jews. Scuffles broke out between the competing groups. Arabs, mistakenly believing they were being targeted, began looting and attacking Jews. The police lost control. The "Jaffa riots" had begun
