Historians' attention was focused for many years on a reappraisal of the years 1933 to 1945. Little emphasis was given to researching the period of liberation following the Nazi genocide of European Jews. In the last 25 years scholars have investigated the liberation phase. During this time, the territory of Germany was home to millions of displaced persons, whose numbers were increased over time by the arrival of expellees and refugees
