When the Mauthausen camp was established in 1938, the prisoners were exclusively German-speaking. In 1939 the fist major transport of non-German speaking prisoners arrived there. As the war continued and an increasing number of territories were occupied, the nationalities of the prisoners reflected the course of the military campaign through Europe
