The establishment of the Mauthausen concentration camp fell in a period during which the SS was expanding its economic power and pursuing a strategy of increasing commercial exploitation of political terror. The lives and deaths of the inmates must therefore always be understood in the context of tension betweeen the economic and political considerations of the SS
