The genocide in Bosnia was not merely a case of what the Serbs called 'ethnic cleansing', but also a re-enactment of the Serbian myth of that nation's defeat by the Ottoman army six hundred years earlier. Ethnic cleansing was sometimes planned in local Serbian Orthodox churches, while religious rituals were held to celebrate successful cleansing
