Reconstucts the efforts Jews in France, Holland and Belgium made to recreate a Jewish community. Demonstrates the enormous difficulties that the Jewish communities in these nations faced, as well as the great tension between various segments of these communities. The negotiations between the survivors rebuilding their communities in western Europe and the Jews in the United States also became an important factor in the shaping of a new self-understanding
