Description

In her book "Under his very windows: the Vatican and the Holocaust in Italy", Susan Zucotti writes that Catholic clergy and laypersons defied the Nazis by providing food, clothing and shelter to Jews and other refugees. As a resut of this 85% of Italian Jews survived the Nazi occupation. Despite this evidence she gives little credit to Pope Pius XII, and she also faults Pope Pius XI. The author maintains that there is now archival evidence of papal involvement in the rescue of the Jews that Zucotti thought did not exist
