Description

This article discusses the issue of restitution of Jewish property stolen by the Nazis in Austria. To this end an Austrian Historical Commission was set up. Their mandate was to investigate and report on expropriations in Austria during the Nazi era and restitution or compensation by the Republic of Austria would be made. The results of the report were harrowing and made clear Austria's complicity with the Germans. In 1998 a Commission for Provenance Research was established whereby the provenance of artifacts and art works were to be investigated in museums. The aim was to return items from federal museums and collections that became federal property as a result of Nazi tyranny. This article discusses the issues involved and the various laws passed in Austria to enable restitution to be made.
