Since the beginning of the twentieth century Eastern European Jews had reacted to major antisemitic violence by establishing documentation and publication committees. Consequently, the thread of a well-established tradition was taken up after the Holocaust, which explains why this endeavour materialised so quickly and without orderly financial sponsoring.
