Since so much of contemporary anxiety is defined by the terrors of the recent past, and those that may lie immediately before us, Levi has clearly staked out major ground for himself as a writer. He manages to retain a rare degree of equanimity and remains among the most lucid of this generations' writers - and among the most sagacious.
