This edited version of a paper presented at the "Europe at La Trobe" conference on Modern Europe deals with the post communist Hungarian radical right wing ideology of anti-liberalism,intolerance,political antisemitism and Christian nationalism.It traces the rise of nationalism and antisemitism since the collapse of the Austro Hungarian monarchy through to the issue of first anti-Jewish legislation in 1938 to the cadre antisemitism of the '50s and the years of perestroika.It concludes drawing parallels between the thirties' anti communism driven rise of fascist ideology and the last four years.
