In March 1944 he was taken to a ghetto in Mateszalka, Hungary, before passing through Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps to arrive in Rehmsdorf (Tröglitz) in Germany. Mendel was kept in Rehmsdorf until Allied bombing forced an evacuation of the camp in 1945. Camp inmates were marched through Germany to Theresienstadt, Czechoslovakia. Here he became sick with typhoid before leaving the camp in May 1945 when it was liberated by the Russian Army. After the war he moved between Prague, Budapest and Ternovo and travelled through Marseilles and Israel to emigrate to Sydney in 1948.
