Description

At the end of the 1950s Walter Kempowski began to question his relatives about their memories of childhood, youth and the time of the Third Reich. The author approached the "red volumes," a basic book for his novel project of the "Deutsche Chronik", which made him famous. At the same time, he began to ask two neighbors, acquaintances and passers-by: "Have you seen Hitler?" and "Did you know about it?" (namely the concentration camps). With this systematic survey, Kempowski entered new territory, breaking a taboo in the economic wonderland of Germany.
