Description

In this book the authors delve into the prefecture archives of Vaucluse and Avignon sifting through administrative records and testimony of postwar tribunals. They consider the workings of small-town individuals on the streets, in the businesses of towns like Avignon and Carpentras reconstructing the networks that allowed Jews to be routinely stripped of their possessions, arrested and deported. The census of Jews maintained by the French was used to enforce legalized looting. French citizens from all walks of life denounced and informed on Jews because of resentment and/or monetary gain. Fifteen cases are examined in depth.
