Partly autobiographical novel about the hellish life fated to the Jews during the Nazi occupation of Prague. Although the author never refers to Nazis Germans of Jews, it is clear the novel is about the Holocaust. Weil tells about the daily life of Josef Roubicek, a simple bank clerk, who after a period of detached resignation to his planned fate, finally decides to go into hiding in order to survive.
