A collection of 15 stories and reminiscences mostly based on personal experiences in Wiesel's youth, in the concentration camps, and his life after liberation. He questions whether placing blame for the Jewish genocide should be personal - on the Nazi leaders - or collective, because people just let it happen. He is also concerned with the effect of the Holocaust on man's humanity
