In the Spring of 1939 vactioners are arriving in Badenheim, the charming resort town for cultivated Jews. Although never explicit, impending doom seems to be always on the edge of the reader's mind, perhaps only because the hindsight of history makes the date meaningful to the reader in a way that would not have been understood at the time
