Survival in Auschwitz: The Nazi assault on humanity
An Italian Jewish chemist, captured by the Fascist militia in 1943, interned because of partisan activities, turned over to the Nazis and shipped to Auschwitz. Provides documentary evidence of life at Auschwitz, in terms of both outward activities and inner reactions. He speaks of the destruction of the personality, which he sees as more dangerous than the physical discomfort and the desparate aloneness in the struggle to survive. One of the most interesting sections of his story is the description of life in the camp just before liberation, when the guards and all the relatively healthy prisoners were gone, and only those not capable of travelling were left.Included in this edition is a conversation between Philip Roth and Primo Levi never before published in book form.
